Quinceanera Dance 101: What to Consider

The dance portion of a Quinceanera is one of the many traditions of the event and can be one of the most fun, most nerve wracking portions of your big day. But no worries! I’m here to break it down nice and simple to relieve some uncertainty.

1. Do you want to dance?

Even though its a traditional activity within the Quinceanera process, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to do it. It’s important that you have fun on your quince and if you force yourself to take part in something you don’t want to do, it kind of defeats the purpose. So the first step, no matter how obvious it may sound, is definitely the most important.

2. Trust me, you can dance.

Now, if the reason you’re leaning towards opting out of the dance is because you feel like you’re not capable or like your nerves may get the best of you, but still want to have those memories of having a waltz with your dad or a fun surprise dance with your friends, I am here to tell you that YOU CAN DANCE. I’ll be honest, performing in front of people can be really nerve wracking especially if you’re not used to it and dance in general can be a bit overwhelming when you’re first learning, but isn’t everything? Dancing isn’t just an art form or a great way to exercise, it’s also meant to be fun and stress-relieving. Also, there’s no need to take yourself so seriously! Don’t worry about it coming out perfect, as long as you enjoy yourself and give it your all, it’ll be way more than enough.

3. Picking your choreographer

Alright, lets say you decide to do the dance now your next step would be to do a little research and pick a choreographer to choreograph your dance. You want to make sure that your choreographer is someone who fits your style and someone you’re comfortable learning from. Sometimes it can be difficult determining what style or vibe you’re going for which is why its important to pick a choreographer who is open minded and willing to work with your unique preferences. The same goes for any vendor you’re interested in hiring for your big day (photographer, venue, DJ, etc…). However, your choreographer is the vendor you’ll be spending the most time with so you want to make sure it’s someone you’ll be able to work with and have fun with to ensure a stress-free process.

4. Picking your music

Okay we’re almost done! Next step is to pick the music you’re going to dance to. You can totally let your choreographer pick the music, but again, you want to make sure you have fun and enjoy it and picking music that you actually like listening to will ensure that. The waltz is usually a slow-paced group dance that involves your court or a partner dance with a loved one. So as for the music selection, I recommend picking a slow, slightly emotional song that means something to you. If its a group waltz it can be your favorite slow song and if its with a loved one, maybe you guys can talk about it and decide on the song together. This will give the dance meaning instead of it just being a waltz. The surprise dance is where you can really have some fun, and personally always my favorite to choreograph. You definitely want to make sure the music is up-beat and energetic and something you like dancing to when you’re alone in your room (we’ve all done it, there’s no shame in admitting it). I would also recommend picking at least 4 songs to make sure the dance is dynamic.

See? It’s not too overwhelming once you break it down to these 4 simple steps. Overall, you want to make sure the decisions you make are to ensure you have the most fun possible, not just on the day of your event but also in the planning process.
