Picking your waltz and surprise dance songs can seem overwhelming, it either feels like there’s way too many options or like nothing really fits with what you’re looking for. As a choreographer, I’m always willing to suggest songs to my clients; however, having the quinceanera pick the songs creates a more personal experience. Below, I’ve listed some of my top suggestions along with two playlists full of songs to give you an idea of which songs to pick. But again, above all else, the songs should be songs that the quinceanera enjoys listening to/ mean something to her since she’ll be listening to these songs quite often during
practice.
Waltz
The waltz song doesn’t have to sound like a typical ballroom song. It can be any song you’d like that has slow beats. Whether you pick a traditional song or a more modern song, the waltz should never be boring despite contrary belief.
Top 3 Waltz Songs:
La Vie En Rose by Edith Piaf: for a classic and elegant waltz
Skyfall by Adele: a bit more modern with an edgy twist
Pink + White by Frank Ocean: for a more soulful R&B waltz
Surprise Dance
The surprise dance is usually a mix of multiple songs from various genres. Some common genres people dance to are: Salsa, Bachata, Cumbia, Merengue, Reggaeton, Hip hop, and Pop. However, you can also do something completely different like a themed dance. For example, you can make your surprise dance a mix of different songs from the same artist (tribute dance), have it be just one genre of dance with multiple songs like a full hip hop dance, have an era-themed dance like just music from the 70s, etc. The possibilities are truly endless, but you want to make sure it’s something you and your court will have fun with!
